November is National Family Caregivers Month, and we at Cypress HomeCare Solutions would like to take a moment and recognize the over 65 million family caregivers in America who are providing care for their loved ones. The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) began promoting the celebration of family caregivers 18 years ago, and we are proud to carry on the tradition of thanking, supporting, educating and empowering these inspirational individuals.
The Family Caregiver Alliance states that close to one-third of our nation’s adults are providing care for someone who is ill, disabled or aging. This staggering statistic puts into perspective the impact family caregivers have on our country as a whole. As family caregivers, these people have the best understanding of the care needed for their loved ones. Their knowledge of their loved one’s medication needs, treatment plans, dietary restrictions and exercise regimen allow them to provide a continuity of care that is vital to the comfort and health of their loved ones.
Not only do family caregivers assist their loved ones, but half of them also work full-time, with many raising their own family simultaneously. The many hats these caregivers wear is truly remarkable, and can be both rewarding and detrimental to their physical and mental wellbeing. While 17% say their health has declined since becoming a caregiver, 8% consider the opposite to be true. Also, the risk for depression can increase with family caregiving, with anywhere from 40% to 70% of family caregivers experiencing clinically significant symptoms of depression.
Overall, family caregivers can be considered one of the unsung heroes of our country. At Cypress, we strive to find resources and solutions to help these individuals and their family members, and we see this month as the perfect time to raise awareness. We all know someone who is caring for a loved one — whether in the same town or across the country. Reach out to these people, offer to assist in some way and show your appreciation for their hard work.
