A Company Built on Values That Still Hold

Family & Nursing Care was founded in 1968 by Kursban’s mother, Sandy, with a simple mission: pay caregivers as much as possible while keeping care affordable for families. That philosophy still guides the company today.

“All of our values still exist,” Kursban explains. The organization actively revisits its mission and guiding principles every week, reinforcing culture as a living practice rather than a slogan on a wall.

For Kursban, leadership is personal. Growing up inside the business shaped his belief that titles do not define respect.

“Just because you have a title doesn’t give you the right to treat anybody differently,” he says.

That mindset flows directly into how the company treats its caregivers.

Why Caregiver Retention Is the Real Secret

While the home care industry struggles with turnover, Family & Nursing Care has achieved unusually low caregiver attrition. Kursban credits two fundamentals: pay and respect.

Caregivers are paid above market rates, and the company allows, and encourages, overtime without passing higher costs to families. Some caregivers earn six-figure incomes because of consistent hours.

But the financial piece is only half the story.

“If your culture is that you’re honored they work at your company, word gets out,” Kursban says.

The result is a workforce that feels proud of where they work, a metric confirmed through independent employee surveys ranking the company in the top percentile for staff pride.

In an industry built on human relationships, retention isn’t just an HR issue. It directly affects patient experience and family trust.

Choice, Transparency, and New Models of Care

One of the company’s distinguishing features is offering both registry and employee-based care models, giving families transparent options rather than a one-size-fits-all structure.

Kursban believes families deserve clarity about costs, tradeoffs, and expectations.

“Don’t overthink it,” he advises families considering care. “Try it. You can always stop. But give it a chance.”

He shares a personal story about convincing his own father to accept help,  a reminder that even industry leaders face the same emotional barriers families experience every day.

Often, what begins as hesitation becomes a trusted relationship.

The Future of Home Care

Looking ahead, Kursban sees rapid industry growth, rising competition, and technology as both challenge and opportunity.

He predicts a cultural shift in how care is framed, especially for baby boomers who resist traditional caregiving labels. The future may focus less on “caregivers” and more on personal assistants supporting independence.

What excites him most is the market’s expansion.

“Competition lifts the bar,” he says. “The cream rises.”

What concerns him is overregulation that could stifle innovation in a private-pay environment where families already vote with their wallets.

Through it all, he remains optimistic.

Home care is not shrinking. It is accelerating.

Small Decisions, Big Impact

The episode closes with practical advice for families: do your due diligence, trust your instincts, and focus on finding the right cultural fit.

The quality of care ultimately comes down to people.

Great companies build systems.
Great care comes from humans.

And when caregivers are respected, supported, and proud of their work, families feel the difference.
