Independence interrupted: What I’ve learned

Written by: Sami-Jo Roth

In this month’s Jewish News column, Managing Partner Bob Roth reflects on how an unexpected health setback and spine surgery forced him to confront one of life’s hardest lessons: learning to slow down.

Drawing from his recovery experience, Bob explores the difference between independence and invincibility, the importance of accepting help and the perspective that can come from difficult seasons of life. He shares how recovery reshaped his understanding of presence, family, dignity and connection — both personally and professionally.

His message is simple: slowing down is not weakness. Sometimes, it’s what helps us heal.
