Throughout the conversation, Roberts emphasized that aging is not a future issue. It is already here.

“The aging population is here. It’s not coming,” Roberts said.

Drawing from decades of experience in aging services, Roberts discussed the mounting pressures facing providers across the continuum of care, including workforce shortages, underfunded systems, growing behavioral health needs, and policy decisions that often fail to account for the realities families and caregivers face every day.

At the center of the discussion was the importance of human connection in caregiving. While both Roth and Roberts acknowledged the growing role artificial intelligence may play in healthcare operations, Roberts stressed that empathy, compassion, and relationship-building can never be replaced by technology.

“The jobs that will never go away are the ones that require empathy, connection, and a human being to be in the room,” Roberts said.

The conversation also explored how caregiving impacts employees and workplaces far beyond what many organizations realize. Roberts shared how her experiences helping friends and families navigate aging loved ones ultimately inspired The Help Project, an initiative designed to help employers better support workers balancing careers with caregiving responsibilities.

“People aren’t going to ask for help until they’re already in crisis,” Roberts explained.

Roth and Roberts discussed how many families quietly struggle with guilt, burnout, isolation, and the overwhelming complexity of navigating healthcare, long-term care, and aging systems that were never truly designed to work together.

Another major focus of the episode centered on the need for broader societal conversations around aging. Roberts argued that while Americans spend enormous amounts of time and money talking about “anti-aging,” far less attention is paid to preparing families, communities, schools, healthcare systems, and workplaces for the realities of growing older.

“If we really care about older adults, we have to start treating aging like the systems issue that it is,” Roberts said.

The episode also highlighted the importance of preserving dignity and independence for older adults whenever possible, particularly through supportive services that allow people to remain safely in their homes and communities longer.

At its core, the conversation served as a reminder that aging impacts every family eventually, and that preparation, compassion, and human connection matter just as much as policy.
