After spending years interviewing hundreds of home care owners, operators, and technology leaders, Allred has developed a unique perspective on what separates thriving organizations from those that struggle. While she has never owned a home care agency herself, she believes listening has been her greatest teacher.

“I’ve interviewed the best, the very best in this industry,” Allred said. “I’ve absorbed a lot of information and knowledge and data and insights.”

One of the conversation’s central themes was leadership. Allred said the strongest organizations share several common characteristics, including a growth mindset, strong culture, operational excellence, and resilience.

“This industry is not for the faint of heart,” she said. “You have to have tolerance for pain and discomfort and resiliency.”

The pair also discussed one of the biggest mistakes home care leaders make: holding onto poor hires for too long and becoming bottlenecks within their own organizations.

“You have to just keep pushing and keep trying to find the right fit people,” Allred said.

Technology and artificial intelligence were another major focus of the discussion. While Allred believes AI will transform home care, she cautioned against expecting too much too soon.

“I do think it’s overhyped,” she said. “Where I think technology is best suited is to solve the simple, mundane, automatable tasks.”

Roth agreed, explaining that automation has helped Cypress HomeCare Solutions become better listeners by allowing caregivers and staff to focus on conversations instead of documentation.

“Let’s let machines do it,” Roth said, referring to repetitive administrative work.

The conversation also explored how home care agencies must continue evolving as the industry changes. Allred argued that the agencies succeeding today are those willing to rethink long-standing processes rather than relying on what worked in the past.

“What worked five years ago, honestly what worked two years ago… is very different,” she said. “People have to be dynamic and flexible.”

For entrepreneurs considering entering the home care industry, Allred offered straightforward advice: don’t expect to succeed by simply offering the same services as everyone else.

“You have to come in with a very strong, unique differentiator,” she said.

The discussion also examined the power of podcasting as a tool for education and professional growth. Allred said curiosity has shaped both her career and leadership philosophy, and she believes the best leaders never stop learning.

“The best leaders are really, really good listeners,” she said.

Toward the end of the episode, the conversation shifted from business to personal growth. Allred encouraged listeners to stay curious, set ambitious goals, and avoid becoming complacent.

“I really believe we can have these incredibly rich lives,” she said. “We need to be curious and be hungry and maximize life.”
