In a recent episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth welcomed Tami Bohannon, President and CEO of AllThrive 365, for a conversation about the growing needs of older adults, the challenges facing family caregivers and why health, housing and human connection are all essential to aging well.
The conversation was especially meaningful for Roth, who serves as Vice Chair and a member of the Board of Directors of AllThrive 365.

Bohannon’s perspective on aging and caregiving was shaped long before she became the leader of one of Arizona’s largest organizations serving older adults. Her own experiences with family caregiving gave her an early understanding of how caring for someone you love can affect an entire family and how difficult it can be to navigate the resources available.
Today, that experience helps guide her work at AllThrive 365, where the focus extends beyond healthcare alone. Bohannon and Roth discussed how aging well also depends on having appropriate housing, access to support and opportunities to remain connected to other people.
That need for connection becomes particularly important as people grow older. Retirement, changes in health, the loss of a spouse or friends and reduced mobility can all increase the risk of isolation. For Bohannon, helping older adults maintain relationships, purpose and a sense of community is an important part of helping them continue to thrive.
Family caregivers need that support as well. Many are balancing care for an aging parent or loved one with careers, children and other responsibilities, often without knowing where to turn for help. Roth and Bohannon discussed why communities need to do a better job of supporting those caregivers and connecting families with resources before they reach a crisis.
The urgency is only growing as America’s population ages. People are living longer, while families and communities are being asked to think differently about how they will meet the healthcare, housing, caregiving and social needs of a growing older population.
For Bohannon, preparing for that future requires collaboration. Healthcare providers, home care organizations, nonprofits, families and community leaders each have a role to play, rather than leaving older adults and their caregivers to navigate aging on their own.
That message will also be at the center of AllThrive 365’s upcoming annual community breakfast. Bohannon spoke with Roth about the event, which brings together hundreds of people to learn more about aging, hear stories from people impacted by AllThrive 365 and connect with resources for older adults and their families.
The breakfast also helps raise funds to support AllThrive 365’s programs and services while drawing attention to the demographic changes already underway. For Bohannon, events like it are an opportunity to get more people thinking about aging before they or someone they love suddenly needs help.
Ultimately, Roth and Bohannon’s conversation was about more than preparing for an aging population. It was about creating communities where people can continue to have choices, relationships, independence and purpose throughout their lives.
As Americans live longer, achieving that goal will require thinking beyond traditional healthcare and recognizing the importance of the homes people live in, the support available to their families and the connections that keep people engaged with the world around them.
