The Value of Exercise

Written by: Cypress HomeCare Solutions

Studies show that 50% of older adults living independently and 75-85% living in care facilities suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain doesn’t have to go unmanaged, though. Simple exercises, that can be done by anyone, are natural and healthy pain-management methods.

Yoga

Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline that involves breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures. Yoga can be modified to work for any age and ability.  Chair yoga is very popular among older adults.  There are many benefits of yoga:

  • reduction of chronic pain related to the lower back, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches
  • more flexibility
  • lower blood pressure
  • insomnia reduction

Tai Chi

Tai chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise that involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner with deep breathing. Each movement flows into the next without pause so your body is constantly moving. There are many physical and mental benefits of Tai chi:

  • inflammation reduction
  • more flexibility
  • strength building
  • greater balance and agility
  • lower levels of depression and anxiety
  • higher energy and more stamina
  • lower blood pressure

Aqua Aerobics

Aerobics are a form of physical exercise that combines stretching and strength training. Aqua aerobics, or water aerobics, are a form of this workout done in shallow water, such as a swimming pool. There are many benefits of aqua aerobics:

  • Damaged muscle and joint rehabilitation
  • Strength building
  • Cardiovascular stamina building
  • Better flexibility
  • Circulation increase
  • Body fat burning

Older adults can take advantage of free fitness programs like Silver Sneakers or perform these exercises at home, either by themselves or with a caregiver. Could your loved one benefit from someone encouraging some physical activity? Call Cypress HomeCare Solutions today to see how we can assist?
