For 50 years, the Foundation for Senior Living (FSL) has been a beacon of support for Arizona’s aging population, providing innovative services to help older adults age independently with dignity. As the state faces an unprecedented demographic shift—with the 65+ population set to double and the 85+ population projected to quadruple in the next 25 years—FSL is marking its milestone anniversary by launching bold initiatives to reimagine aging services. Tami Bohannon, FSL’s President and CEO, has articulated a forward-thinking vision to “disrupt aging services” and address the evolving needs of seniors and their families through innovation and compassion.

From Adult Day Care to Affordable Housing: Meeting Critical Needs

FSL’s mission operates at the crucial intersection of housing and healthcare, offering a suite of programs that tackle pressing challenges such as social isolation, affordable housing shortages, and caregiver burnout. With its “Vision 2050” initiative, FSL aims to revolutionize aging services by introducing preventive care and promoting active aging.

At the heart of its services are Adult Day Health Centers located in Tempe and Glendale. These medical-equipped centers provide critical resources for seniors, including medical supervision, restorative therapy, specialized nutrition programs, and transportation services. By creating a safe and engaging environment, these centers offer both seniors and their caregivers much-needed respite and support.

Affordable housing is another cornerstone of FSL’s work. In a state facing a 200,000-unit shortage in affordable housing, FSL manages 25 apartment communities that provide sustainable housing solutions for seniors living on fixed incomes. These communities not only offer a secure place to live but also foster social connections that are vital for mental and emotional well-being.

Combatting Social Isolation Through Community Support

FSL has implemented a variety of community support programs designed to enhance quality of life for seniors. Northwest Valley Connect ensures that seniors have access to reliable transportation, while home-delivered meal services in Peoria and Wickenburg offer nutritious food for those unable to shop or cook. Senior centers across the state provide both meals and social activities, fostering a sense of community.

To address the growing problem of social isolation, FSL’s Friendly Caller program connects volunteers with seniors who might otherwise go days without meaningful interaction. These regular check-ins provide not only companionship but also an essential safety net for older adults living alone.

Innovation in Home Safety and Modifications

Recognizing that a safe home environment is critical for aging in place, FSL’s home improvement division focuses on advanced energy efficiency assessments, weatherization services, and modifications that enhance accessibility and prevent falls. Partnering with utility companies, FSL has expanded these services to ensure that seniors live in homes that are both safe and energy-efficient.

The Future of Aging Services: Vision 2050

As a newly named Piper Fellow, CEO Tami Bohannon is set to explore best practices in senior care across the country. This research will inform FSL’s efforts to reimagine senior center programming, integrate active lifestyle elements, and develop cutting-edge wellness programs. Vision 2050 represents a commitment to creating sustainable solutions that will help Arizona’s aging population thrive in the decades ahead.

How You Can Support FSL’s Mission

FSL’s work is only possible with the support of the community. Arizona residents can contribute by:

  • Making tax-credit donations of up to $800 for couples or $461 for individuals.
  • Volunteering their time to support FSL’s various programs.
  • Participating in or spreading the word about FSL’s services.
  • Partnering with FSL to enhance community impact.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Dignity and Independence

As FSL celebrates its 50th anniversary, it remains steadfast in its commitment to helping seniors live independently and confidently. By leveraging innovative programming and fostering strong community partnerships, FSL continues to address the evolving needs of Arizona’s aging population. The next chapter in FSL’s history promises to build on its legacy of care and innovation, ensuring a brighter future for seniors across the state.
